WASHINGTON, D.C. – Across generations, race and ethnicity, party affiliations, and income levels, large majorities of Americans agree that they are willing to pay for and improve Social Security, as highlighted in a new animated video released today, on Social Security’s 78th birthday, by the National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI).
The video, “Social Security: Americans Agree,” focuses on the results of a national survey that NASI released earlier this year. The survey found that 7 out of 10 Americans see Social Security as the foundation of their retirement security, 84% of Americans say Social Security does not provide enough income to retirees, and 75% say we should consider increasing benefits.
“A true test of Americans’ support for Social Security is their willingness to pay for it,” said Jasmine Tucker, Senior Policy Analyst at NASI and co-author of the study on which the video is based. “What we’re hearing loud and clear is that most Americans value Social Security for themselves and their families and are willing to contribute somewhat more to keep it strong for future generations.”
