WASHINGTON, DC – The National Academy of Social Insurance today announced awards to nine grassroots organizations to support greater understanding of Social Security outside the beltway. The grantees will develop targeted informational materials and conduct outreach efforts to their constituencies, which encompass vulnerable groups including communities of color, older women, low-wage workers, young adults, and children.
“It is more important than ever – in light of job losses, declining asset values, and rising out-of-pocket medical costs – that groups most reliant on Social Security have their voices heard in policy debates about its future,” said Virginia Reno, Vice President for Income Security at the National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI). “These educational efforts will prepare contributors to Social Security to better engage in the public debate on its reform.”
NASI issued the awards as part of its “Innovative Projects to Strengthen Social Security for Vulnerable Populations,” project, funded by the Ford Foundation. An independent committee named by Janice Gregory, President of NASI, set criteria, reviewed applications, and selected awardees.
