Jennie Chin Hansen, Susan Daniels, Judy Feder, and Michael Graetz Elected to NASI Board of Directors

WASHINGTON, DC–The National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI) has elected Jennie Chin Hansen, Susan Daniels, Judy Feder, and Michael Graetz to four-year terms on its Board of Directors.

“NASI is pleased to add the vision and expertise of these four individuals to the Board,” said President Margaret Simms. “They are among the country’s leading thinkers on policies related to long-term care, disability, health, and taxes. We are fortunate that they share our mission of promoting understanding of how social insurance contributes to economic security and a vibrant economy.”

Jennie Chin Hansen is President of AARP. In 2005, Hansen transitioned after nearly 25 years as executive director of On Lok, Inc., a nonprofit family of organizations providing integrated and comprehensive primary and long-term care community based services in San Francisco. In 2000, she joined the National Advisory Board of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Executive Nurse Fellows Program. In 2004 she became a board member of Lumetra, California’s Quality Improvement organization. Recently, she was appointed as a federal Commissioner of MedPAC, a member of the Effective Health Care Stakeholder Group of AHRQ , and a board member of California Regional Health Information Organization (CalRHIO). Previously, she was president of the 8,000-member American Society of Aging. She has received alumni distinction from both Boston College and the University of California, San Francisco. A member of NASI since 2002, Ms. Hansen is now on its Board of Directors and serves as its Secretary. She received her M.S. in nursing from the University of California, San Francisco.

Susan M. Daniels is a Consultant at Daniels & Associates. From 1998 to 2000, Ms. Daniels was Deputy Commissioner for Disability and Income Security Programs at the Social Security Administration. She joined the Clinton Administration in 1994 where she spearheaded the Administration’s disability and employment reform activities resulting in the passage of The Ticket To Work And Work Incentive Improvement Act. Prior to that, Ms. Daniels was Associate Commissioner at the Administration on Developmental Disabilities, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. From 1987 to 1988, she served on the President’s Committee on Employment of Persons with Disabilities. She currently serves on the Advisory Board of The Journal on Disability Income and Work Injury Compensation of the Social Insurance Research Network (SIRN) and she was a co-chair of the Academy’s 18th annual conference, “Older and Out of Work: Jobs and Social Insurance for a Changing Economy.” A member of NASI since 2001, Ms. Daniels received her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill.

Judith Feder is a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress and a professor of public policy at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute. From 1999-2008, she served as Dean of Public Policy at the Institute. From 1993 through 1995, Professor Feder served in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), leaving as Acting Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation. At DHHS, she played a key leadership role in the Clinton Administration’s effort to enact comprehensive health reform legislation. Before joining the Clinton Administration, she was a widely published health policy researcher at Georgetown University, and prior to that, at the Urban Institute. Professor Feder also served as Staff Director for the U.S. Bipartisan Commission on Comprehensive Health Care, known as the Pepper Commission. She currently serves on the Advisory Board of The Journal on Health Care Delivery and Financing of the Social Insurance Research Network (SIRN) and she was co-chair of the Academy’s study panel on long-term care. A founding member of the National Academy of Social Insurance, Professor Feder received her Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University.

Michael J. Graetz is Justus S. Hotchkiss Professor of Law at Yale Law School. In the fall of 2009, Graetz will join the Columbia Law School. During his tenure at Yale, he has acted as Assistant to the Secretary and Special Counsel, U.S. Department of Treasury, and Deputy Assistant Secretary (Tax Policy), U.S. Department of Treasury. Prior to that, Graetz served as a Professor of Law at the University of Southern California, California Institute of Technology and the University of Virginia.. He is the author of numerous articles and books including 100 Million Unnecessary Returns– A Fair, Simple and Competitive Tax System for the U.S. (Yale University Press, 2008) and True Security: Rethinking American Social Insurance (co-authored with Jerry Mashaw). Graetz served as co-chair of the Academy’s 10th Annual Conference, “Framing the Social Security Debate: Values, Politics, and Economics,” in January 1998. A member of NASI since 1993, he co-chaired its “Uncharted Waters” Study Panel, and co-authored the report, Uncharted Waters: Paying Benefits from Individual Accounts In Federal Retirement Policy. Graetz received his LL.B. from the University of Virginia.
