Washington, DC – The National Academy of Social Insurance announced today Jason Barabas and Irineu Carvalho as co-winners of the ninth annual John Heinz Award.
Jason Barabas was a political science student at Northwestern University when he wrote his dissertation, “Americans Discuss Social Security: How Deliberation Affects Public Opinion.” Currently he is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for the Study of Democratic Politics, Princeton University. Barabas’s dissertation was nominated for the award by Northwestern University Professors Fay Lomax Cook and Benjamin Page.
Irineu Carvalho was named co-winner for his dissertation “Essays in Development Economics” while an economics student at MIT. He now works at The RIS Consulting Group in Boston, MA. Carvalho’s dissertation was nominated for the award by MIT Professor Dora Costa.
The award, which includes a $1,000 prize, was presented by Academy President Lawrence Thompson and Award Committee Chairman Robert Hudson of Boston University during the National Academy of Social Insurance 13th Annual Conference in Washington, DC.
The award is supported by The Teresa and John Heinz Fund of the Heinz Family Foundation and is issued in honor of Senator John Heinz. As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Heinz helped chart the Social Security rescue effort in 1983 and worked tirelessly to insulate the Social Security Trust Funds from the rest of the Federal budget. He was a leading expert in the Senate on private pensions, and health care and aging policy and was a member of the Academy’s Board of Advisors from the organization’s inception in 1986. Robert M. Ball, Founding Chair, said, “John Heinz was a leading proponent of Social Security with a true appreciation of the value of social insurance principles in developing public policy. He was a true supporter of the National Academy of Social Insurance and contributed importantly to its objectives. We are privileged to award this prize in his honor.”
