Bruce C. Vladeck Awarded the 2005 Robert M. Ball Award

WASHINGTON, DC – The National Academy of Social Insurance presents today the 2005 Robert M. Ball Award to Bruce C. Vladeck, Principal at Ernst & Young LLP and a founding member of the Academy, for his distinguished contributions to the health care field.

“Bruce Vladeck reminds one of Bob Ball in combining a commitment to social insurance with managerial acumen, clear prose, and an ability to inspire respect and affection from those within his organization. These are rare combinations, truly to be prized,” said NASI member Ted Marmor, Professor of Public Policy and Management at Yale University and co-chair of the event.

Vladeck’s career in health care policy spans more than three decades in public administration, academia, and philanthropy. In the early part of his career he served on various committees at the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, as well as other bodies such as the Task Force on Medicaid Services and Cost Containment, or the New York City AIDS Task Force. He was the President of the United Hospital Fund of NewYork from 1983 to 1993, when he was appointed by President Clinton to be administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration (now Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services).

After his service at HCFA, Vladeck was appointed to the National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare, a role in which he advocated for improving and expanding health insurance for the elderly, the disabled, and the poor. In his current role at Ernst & Young LLP, Vladeck works in the Health Sciences Advisory Services practice.

Vladeck authored and co-authored eight books and a large number of book chapters and articles. He earned a MA and a Ph.D in political science, both from The University of Michigan.

The Robert M. Ball Award for Outstanding Achievements in Social Insurance honors the work of Bob Ball while applauding those who continue his legacy. It was instituted in 2004, when Steven C. Goss, Chief Actuary, was the first to be presented this award.
