Michael M. Hash is Principal at Health Policy Alternatives, Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based health consulting firm specializing in health policy financing issues. He provides strategic policy and political consulting services for a wide range of national and state organizations including associations representing beneficiaries, health plans, academic health centers, hospitals, physicians, nurses and private foundations.
From March 1998 through December 2000, Hash served as Deputy Administrator and Acting Administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration (now the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services). He oversaw the implementation of President Clinton’s Nursing Home Initiative that redesigned certification and survey protocols. Hash also led CMS’s effort to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities in its programs. He also held positions with the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Energy and Commerce, Health and Environment Subcommittee and the American Hospital Association.
Hash earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Washington and Lee University. He also served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. He has been a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance since 2001.
Hash is a volunteer member of the board of directors at Providence Hospital in Washington where he has the opportunity to see how health policies play out in a community hospital committed to serving a large number of uninsured patients. He also spends much of his free time gardening and boating in and around the Chesapeake Bay.
