January 29, 2014
NASI Members: You are cordially invited to attend the 2014 Annual Membership Meeting & Luncheon on January 29, 2014.
Please join us on Wednesday, January 29th, for the annual meeting of the Academy. NASI’s 2014 membership luncheon will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the War on Poverty, in addition to kicking off an ongoing member-driven discussion on the role of the Academy in strengthening social insurance for today’s workers, retirees and future generations.
Some believe that we declared a war on poverty in the 1960s and we ended up with “a negotiated settlement.” Fifty years later, we need to ask – what has been the lasting impact of the War, and how will we respond to rising rates of poverty?
Featuring War on Poverty veterans and fellow NASI members:
- Peter B. Edelman served as a Legislative Assistant to Senator Robert F. Kennedy and has been Associate Dean of the Georgetown Law Center, where he now teaches. Professor Edelman’s most recent book, So Rich So Poor: Why It’s So Hard to End Poverty in America, was published by The New Press in May 2012.
- Ruth Perot was an activist in CORE (Congress of Racial Equality), and today she is a leader on issues of racial equity in health care policy. Perot leads SHIRE, the Summit Health Institute for Research and Education, which enrolls uninsured residents in the DC Health Link under the Affordable Care Act, and addresses many other health equity issues.
- Edelman and Perot will be interviewed by William J. Arnone, NASI Board Chair, who was a young activist during the War.
Following the interview and a brief Q&A, NASI President G. Lawrence Atkins will moderate an open discussion on how the Academy and its members can be most effective in addressing concerns about the affordability and sustainability of social insurance programs, about health care coverage and quality, and about the role of social insurance in confronting the poverty that even working families can experience in today’s America.
Your active participation in this dialogue and strategy session is critical for maintaining and increasing NASI’s impact.
This free luncheon is open to active NASI members only. The membership meeting immediately precedes NASI’s 26th annual policy research conference on Strengthening the Web of Financial and Retirement Security for Today’s Working Americans. Note: Registration for the membership luncheon meeting is separate from NASI’s 2014 conference.
Pre-Conference Roundtable Sessions: 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Immediately following the luncheon meeting, members are invited to participate in free pre-conference roundtable discussion sessions.
