While Social Security is best known as a retirement program, it also provides irreplaceable insurance value for young families. Children and families have an important stake in the future of Social Security. As policymakers consider ways to balance Social Security’s long-term finances – through benefit cuts or revenue increases – citizens who are concerned about preserving and advancing the wellbeing of children need to be part of the policy debate.
