Jacob Lew
Visiting professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs; Managing partner at Lindsay Goldberg
Jacob “Jack” Lew is a visiting professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and is a managing partner at Lindsay Goldberg. Previously he served as the 76th U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and White House Chief of Staff for President Obama. Prior to that role, Secretary Lew was the Director of the Office of Management and Budget under both President Obama and President Clinton and was Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources. Lew began his public service on Capitol Hill, where he served as a policy adviser to House Speaker Thomas P, O’Neill, Jr. for many years.
As a public official, Lew covered a broad array of policy areas, and devoted particular attention to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, nutrition programs and programs targeted at poverty alleviation. In 1983 as liaison between the Commission on Social Security Reform and the House leadership, he played a central role in negotiations that led to the historic agreement that extended trust fund solvency for a half century. As Treasury Secretary he chaired the boards of both Social Security and Medicare.
In the private sector, Lew was previously chief operating officer of New York University and of several business units within Citi and practiced law at Van Ness Feldman.
Lew also previously served on the Corporation for National and Community Service Board and chaired its Management, Administration, and Governance Committee. He is on the board of several non-profit organizations, focusing particularly on the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. He was a founding chair of the Advisory Board for City Year New York and is co-President of the board of the National Library of Israel US.
In addition to the National Academy of Social Insurance, where he has been a member since 1999, he is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Jacob Lew received his A.B. degree magna cum laude from Harvard and his J.D. degree from Georgetown University and is a member of the bar in Massachusetts and the District of Columbia.
